A traditional birth attendant is a privately hired woman who supports birth at home in a non-medical capacity with the belief that birth is not a medical event. I do not carry a license nor do I risk out women from support based on variations of normal birth. My care is mother-centered -journeying through your individual priorities for your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum times with holistic knowledge and wellness. This includes emotional, and holistic support for an out of system birth at home.
An Ontario midwife is a registered medical provider publicly paid by the Canadian health system. She is beholden to her licensure which is regulated by a board of obstetrics and works under its guidelines of how she supports "low-risk" births in the hospital or at home. A midwife performs medical prenatal testing and has the ability to write prescriptions and order requisitions.
No. These are restricted medical items that I do not have access to nor have a place in undisturbed birth.
It is completely legal in Canada to birth at home without a licensed medical provider. The birth registration process will still happen in two parts (the first being online), however it is up to the parents to send in additional paperwork to the Registrar's Office instead of a doctor or midwife. As your traditional birth attendant, I will provide information on the paperwork and mail-in process.
Yes. YOU are the mother who is choosing to birth at home on your own terms. No matter the type of pregnancy or birth plan, as a traditional birth companion I will attend you at home if that is your choice.
